Russia has finally broken its silence amid growing tensions between the United States and Ukraine, offering its perspective on the recent high-stakes meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Kremlin has now weighed in on the matter, addressing Ukraine’s stance on potential negotiations.
A Heated Exchange in the Oval Office
During his recent visit to Washington, President Zelensky met with President Trump and Vice President JD Vance to discuss pressing issues, primarily the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. However, what was intended to be a diplomatic discussion quickly turned tense.
Trump and Vance expressed frustration over what they perceived as a lack of gratitude from Zelensky, as well as his apparent reluctance to negotiate a ceasefire. “You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people,” Trump reportedly told Zelensky. “You’re risking World War Three, and it’s incredibly disrespectful to this country, which has supported you far more than many believe it should have.”
Following the contentious meeting, Trump made a decisive announcement: all U.S. military aid to Ukraine would be put on hold. The move was met with approval from Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who called it “the best contribution to achieving peace.”
Zelensky’s Letter to Congress
After leaving the White House earlier than expected, Zelensky drafted a letter to President Trump, which was later read aloud before Congress on March 4, 2025.
In the letter, Zelensky expressed Ukraine’s readiness to engage in peace talks: “Ukraine is prepared to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible.” He further stated, “My team and I are willing to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to establish a lasting peace. We deeply appreciate the extensive support America has provided in our fight to maintain sovereignty and independence.”
The letter also mentioned Ukraine’s willingness to finalize a rare earth minerals agreement with the U.S. at a time convenient for Washington. This deal had been scheduled for signing during Zelensky’s visit to the White House, which ultimately ended in diplomatic turmoil.
Moscow’s Reaction
Russia responded positively to Ukraine’s apparent shift in stance. Peskov acknowledged the letter, stating, “We see this as a constructive step. The real question is who will be representing Ukraine at the negotiating table.”
However, he also pointed out a legal obstacle. In 2022, Zelensky issued a decree that officially barred Ukraine from engaging in peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “For now, this ban remains in effect,” Peskov noted. “While the change in tone is promising, no concrete steps have been taken yet.”
Ongoing Conflict
Despite the diplomatic developments, Russia’s military actions in Ukraine continue. On March 4, 2025, Russia launched a drone strike on the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa. The attack resulted in the death of a 77-year-old woman and left three others injured. Regional governor Oleh Kiper confirmed that the victim succumbed to shrapnel wounds, while the strike also caused significant damage to a private home and ignited fires.
In retaliation, Ukraine’s military reported that it had successfully intercepted and shot down 115 of the 181 drones fired by Russia.
