Sora, a black Labrador Pitbull mix, arrived at Valley Animal Center (VAC) nearly four years ago. Her previous owner had to surrender her, realizing that Sora needed more attention and training than they could provide. Despite her sweet nature and energetic personality, Sora spent almost 900 days at the shelter without finding a permanent home.
A Glimmer of Hope
In July 2021, Sora’s fortunes seemed to change when someone came to the shelter interested in adopting her. The excitement was palpable, and everyone at VAC was hopeful that Sora would finally find her forever home. However, this joy was short-lived.
A Heartbreaking Return
Just a day after her adoption, the new owner decided to return Sora. The reason given was that Sora hadn’t had enough time to adjust to her new home and was introduced to new family members too quickly. This sudden change left Sora heartbroken and disheartened, especially after spending so long in the shelter.
Struggles and Hope
Despite her heartache, the Valley Animal Center remains hopeful. Living in a shelter, even with the best care and enrichment, cannot replace the love and stability of a forever home. The prolonged kennel life has taken a toll on Sora, leading to some anxious behaviors.
According to Mariah Prudhume, a certified dog trainer, Sora’s mental health could dramatically improve in a loving home. With patience and affection, she could overcome her reactivity and become the happy, goofy dog she is meant to be.
